Johnny Helms obituary

A legend in his own lifetime!

John joined the club in 1946 and won the Fastest Novice Award in 1947.  During his time at the club he held the positions of treasurer, magazine and press secretary, chairman and president, as well as welcoming visitors to the annual club dinner over fifty times.   In the earlier days John organised club 10’s evcry Wednesday evening through the 50’s and 60’s in conjunction with the Merseyside Wheelers and also the evening criteriums for seventeen years.

I’ve known John since I joined the club in 1954, when I was thirteen years old.  He always gave me help and encouragement during my racing days, something I will never forget.

John also attended hundreds of club dinners across the length and breadth of the country, sometimes incorporating a 3 day journey in all weathers as he never held a driving license.  John was a true gentleman and clubman who only had kind words for others.

However, John was known best nationally for his cartoons which featured in cycling weekly, probably amounting to thousands of drawings over the years = an amazing achievement.

John will be sadly missed by all club members and by fellow cyclists throughout the country.

John Atkinson Obituary

A bike rider to the core

John Atkinson, tester, roadman, team mechanic and Chairman of Warrington Road Club for many years, died recently.

John was a bike rider all his life.  He started his cycling career with Warrington Road Club in 1956.  His early career focused on time trialling.  In 1959 he won the M&D 12 hour at the age of 19.  That same year he was 5th in the National Championship 12 hour and a member of the winning Team.  This ride was beset with punctures and mechanical problems which lead him to ride no less than six bikes in the event.

In the late 60s and 70s his attention turned to road racing.  He was always a force to be reckoned with and he had many high placings in senior road races including 2nd in the Peter Fryer series the year after he became 40.

John had a couple of seasons in the late 80’s working as team mechanic for his old friend Paul Sherwin at Raleigh Banana.  He returned to Warrington Road Club and took on the role of Chairman in the mid 90’s.

John will be remembered for his long service to the club, his dry humour on club runs and dinners and for his encouragement, generous support and concern of others both inside and outside of cycling.
