Stan Lea

One of our older members Stan Lea died on 19th February. He was 83 years old. He was struck down by motor neurone disease and spent a number of months in Ruthin hospital where he was visited by a number of his old clubmates. He was unable to speak but could communicate a little by writing. The visits were obviously highly emotional for Stan.

He was a great mileater. An average day’s ride for Stan was about 130 miles, preferably in Wales. His favourite place was Mrs Jones at Glasfryn where he was regarded as one of the family and for many years he went there on New Years Day and his name was always the first one in the visitor’s book.

In 1950 the club turned its attention to 24 hour racing. In that year’s event it rained for 17 hours but Stan finished third. He was third again the following year and the year after that he was in the winning team. In all he rode thirteen 24 hour events, winning one of them and his greatest distance was 452 miles.

He also rode thirty consecutive Anfield 100’s finishing in every one of them. His best performance was in 1953 when he finished fourth with a time of 4.30.23, which was a club record at the time, and led the wining team.

Stan lived in Helsby and moved to his beloved Wales when he retired and where he remained very active well into old age.
